ASFL2 Newsletter #15 (1/4/11)

The general formula of new season = new newsletter will apply once again... (all links open in a new window)

New League Features & Improvements

Hopefully you've come across the two major new features already.

First, the league now has a new and improved message board on the website proper, instead of through suddenlaunch.com. Why? Primarily, the move was made to make the message board more reliable with a number of improvements, including nested quotes, a link to new posts since your last visit and an accurate timestamp among other things. Secondarily, the hope was to move traffic onto the website to make the league more viable while hopefully bringing more attention to the other features on the website.
All members were pre-registered for the new message board before it was made public. Your username is set to your name as it appears on the league members page. If you've previously participated in a game or draft on the website, your password was set to your most recent password used as of September. If you haven't participated in a game or draft on the website, your password will be emailed to you after this newsletter is sent out. If you need any help sorting out your password, feel free to email me.

The other major feature recently announced is Member Profiles. The profiles are equipped to show basic information (favorite teams, location in conference, birthday and team name), career statistics for individual games and for the overall championship, and show which games you plan to participate in while displaying the information needed to participate. To see the full capabilities, check my profile, I'm working toward creating a database with all game standings from earlier in the league's history. Once I've accomplished that, I'll be able to create a method to automatically update each member's profile statistics.
You can use the "Edit Profile" link from your profile to modify all non-statistical information and select what you'd like to remain private. This includes altering your league status from active to on vacation (with an expected return date) or any other kind of hiatus. Those who modify their profile will receive a bonus point for the 2011-2012 season as a thank you. The section designed to help you sign up for and reveal which games you'd like to participate in is the "Games Participation Breakdown" section at the lower left of the profile's main page. If you were to check it before Sunday, you'll see the ID and password for Fantasy Golf with a link to the game on Yahoo!, when the overall standings page for Fantasy Golf become available, the link will change to point to the game's standings.

In the coming weeks I hope to be able to make more improvements, including finally setting up the points log to allow for quicker and easier updating of the championship standings while allowing for more dynamic standings and for everyone to be able to search through them in ways not previously possible. It will also allow me to maintain a projected championship standings page that will include championship point totals from every ongoing game in an "if the season ended today" manner. Around the same time, I hope to improve the ASFL2 front page to include a better standings display, a happy birthday box (for those that update their profile), and a news/articles system on the front page as opposed to the simple boxes you see all the way down the page now.

I'd also like to note that the Fantasy Games section has been changed to include links to all games the league participates in, including those on Yahoo!.

Game and Season Updates

With the NFL regular season ending, two more games finished this weekend. NFL Pickem results have been updated with Survival Pickem results potentially taking the rest of the week given the nature of the tiebreakers. I'm hopeful that these will be the last two instances of the games being featured on Yahoo!, with the Fantasy Games section playing host next season. If things go particularly well, Survival Pickem will be replaced with another pickem-style game.

On top of those two ending, NFL Playoffs Pickem and Fantasy NFL Playoffs are now available as two of just four games remaining to begin for the 2010-2011 season. The deadline for entries in NFL Playoffs Pickem is January 8th at 4:27 PM ET with lineups for the Wild Card Round of Fantasy NFL Playoffs also due at that time.

With the calendar reading January, a new ASFL2 season is about to begin. The first game for the 2011-2012 season is Fantasy Golf with the first tournament of the season beginning on Thursday. Please make sure you get into a group as soon as possible. The current ID is 399 with a password of 123456. If you're already in an ASFL2 group with a different ID, stay where you are. The second game, Fantasy NASCAR, should be available within the next 10 days, watch the ASFL2 website for sign up information.

For the coming season, I'm going to be investigating revising the scoring system to allow for the championship points awarded for a member's final game rank (in non-draft sports) to be easily determined before, or shortly after, the game starts as opposed to having to wait until the end of the season when I need to base things on how many members participated in the game.
At this point I plan to base the system off of setting a default scoring for a 100 member game and then using a formula with the tier rank and number of participants to determine how many points each member receives.
Not a lot is set at this point, but I can say that going forward there may be decimal points in championship point totals and every member will earn at least one championship point for participating in a game.
Along similar lines, I plan to alter the methodology for giving bonus points based on message board activity. Bonus points will be given out based on post count and time logged in beginning with the 2011-2012 season. I also hope to allow for sessions throughout the website in the future with a bonus point or a fraction of a bonus point being given out simply for logging into the website daily, but that may be a way off.

Miscellaneous

Speaking of the new season, if you've moved to a new city since you last submitted your ASFL2 information; please make sure to update your member profile so I can place you in the proper conference.

I hope to set up the ASFL2 Keeper Leagues Fantasy Baseball drafts by the end of next week. Please be on the look out for information as the deadline to select your players to be kept will likely be around 4-6 weeks from now. I'll also be working on the standings for the other three sports this week.

The ASFL2 Money Leagues are back in action a month from now with Super Bowl Pools with buy-ins of $1, $2 or $5. You can buy as many boxes in a pool as you'd like to. I've set up this thread on the message board to gauge interest and provide updates to participate.

And finally, I've once again put together a recruiting team to help me advertise for the website. If you're interested in helping advertise or have any ideas to help, please reply to this thread. I can offer up to seven bonus points to those who do help.
