ASFL2 AFL Pickem - Rules

Introduction

Arena Football League [AFL] Pickem is a fairly standard pickem game designed in the same manner as our NFL Pickem, game but with scoring tweaked slightly to account for the higher scoring nature of the AFL. For each of the 153 regular season and seven playoff games of the Arena Football League, submit your predicted score line. Your predicted result will automatically by determined based on the scores you submit. Your predicted scores and result will then earn you points based on their accuracy. AFL Pickem is an unofficial game with the 2012 season being the first to be run on the league website instead of through a message board.

What is the Arena Football League? The sport itself was invented by Jim Foster in the early 1980s while he attended an indoor soccer league all-star game. The league was founded in 1987 with the 2012 season being the 25th in the league's history (the 2009 season was lost due to financial and other internal issues), a minor league (af2) ran from 2000 to 2009. As you might have guessed, arena football is quite different from the NFL game. The scoring methods and points earned are the same, but with the field size halved, there's quite a bit more scoring. The signature piece to the arena field are the rebound nets at either end. The ball is always in play when it hits the net as it does on the vast majority of kickoffs. There are plenty of other key differences with the second most obvious being the fact that AFL teams have 20-man rosters (instead of 53-man) with eight on the field at a time instead of 11. Punting isn't allowed, teams will either kick for a field goal on fourth down or simply try to get a first down. The field goal posts (part of the net) are half as wide as the NFL version with them also being an extra five feet off the ground. Finally, overtime sees both teams guaranteed a chance at the ball, in the same manner of the new NFL playoff overtime rules. While ties aren't particularly common in the NFL, they're barely possible in the AFL.

The regular season covers 20 weeks from early March to mid July with the playoffs running a further three weeks after the regular season. Teams play 18 games over the course of 20 weeks.

Participating

To participate you need to go to the "Sign Up" page and register. The game is free for all participants. If you are an ASFL2 member, make sure you're entering your name as it appears on the ASFL2 members database. When registering you can choose to receive an email reminder to make your picks two days and a day before any game if you have yet to. You can change your email or password after registering by using the appropriate links on the game's front page.

Once registered you can submit your weekly picks via the "Submit Your Picks" link on the game page and review them via the "Review Your Picks" link. You can also submit your pick for an individual game through the various schedule pages. You can submit your pick for all games up to their scheduled start as recorded on the various game pages. If you don't submit a score for a game, you will be noted as having made an incorrect pick and will receive 0 points for it. To keep track of all game scoring you can follow the "Game Standings" link.

To help you make your decision, we've provided the full AFL schedule and team schedules that can be viewed by week, month or the entire season. The game also provides detailed AFL Standings including full league, home/road, monthly, half and scoring-specific standings as well as standings against a team's last five games or in OT. Once the season begins, AFL Pickem and AFL team scoring stats will also be available via the "Game Stats" link.

To help enchance the interaction, I strongly encourage discussion of the game and the AFL season on the league message board via the game thread.

Non-ASFL2 Members are allowed to participate in the game, but are not counted for bonus points purposes. They're listed on the standings pages by default (aside from those involving bonus points), but can be removed by clicking the "Member?" or "M?" heading.

Member Total:

AFL Pickem follows the standard ASFL2 scoring formula of , where n is the number of members, m is the maximum point value and r is the member's rank. The full member total is also used in the calculations for the picks percentage standings.

The maximum values for both are given as the default values in the text boxes above. To return to the default values, leave the field blank when submitting. The member total is also calcuated based on the current standings.

^The Week Win (WW) is an-ASFL2 wide relic remaining from league's days with all games being run through Yahoo!. Back then, the number of groups determined the number of week wins available. Now, the number of ASFL2-member participants is divided by fifty and rounded up to arrive at the same number as if the game had never left.
~The total number of points available each week is the number of games played times 100. To reach 66.6% (two-thirds) of that, a member would need to average 66.6 points per game and so on through 80%. The minimum percentages are subject to change as I get a feel for how realistic each total is.
*Points are not cumulative, if your pick percentage for a week is 87.5% (7/8), you earn 0.67 points; not 0.67 plus the 0.33 for being better than 83.3% (5/6). The same applies to points percentage.
