|
The Brazilian GP was first staged in 1972 as a
non-championship event at Interlagos. The São Paulo
track was built in the 1930s between two artificial lakes
on land initially earmarked for housing. Its original
length was just shy of five miles (eight kilometers) and
had a number of long straights linked together by fast
corners.
The defending world champion, Paulistano Emerson
Fittipaldi, won the first championship running of the
Brazilian GP in 1973 and he triumphed again in front of
his home crowd the following year on his way to a second
world title. Another son of São Paulo, Carlos Pace,
made it three wins in a row for Brazil in 1975, but that
was to be his solitary Formula 1 victory after Pace died
in a plane crash in 1977. In 1985, the venue changed its
name to Autódromo José Carlos Pace to honor
the driver.
The track underwent extensive safety-related changes
before the grand prix returned in 1990 after a stint at
Rio de Janeiro's Jacarepaguá circuit. Yet another
São Paulo racer, Ayrton Senna, won the 1991 and
1993 editions of the event and Felipe Massa joined the
honor roll in 2006. Massa notched up another victory in
2008 and he briefly thought it had earned him the world
title until Lewis Hamilton spoilt the party half a minute
later.
The final round of the 2012 Formula 1 season takes place at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo this Sunday. For the third time in six years, the Brazilian venue will be the stage for the world drivers' championship finale. Two-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel holds a 13 point lead over 2005 and 2006 titlist Fernando Alonso, meaning a top four finish would guarantee the German a third consecutive crown. In 2010, roles were reversed and it was Alonso who led Vettel going into the final event. On that occasion, Alonso and Ferrari committed a tactical error, allowing Vettel to take the victory and his first championship. This weekend the Scuderia will hope it is Vettel and Red Bull who slip up to allow them to take the glory.
