|
Except from the majority of the 1970s and 1984,
the Belgian GP has always been held at the highly-rated
Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, located in the Ardennes
forest. The track was designed in 1920 and used the public
roads that connected the towns of Spa, Malmedy and
Stavelot. The venue only saw motorcycle racing in the
early years, but after the success of the 24 Hours of Le
Man in France, the Spa 24 Hours endurance race was created
and hosted in 1924. The Belgian GP was born the following
year.
The original layout of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
was 9 miles (15 km) long and included the frightening
Masta Kink, a high-speed chicane along the stretch from
Malmedy to Stavelot. Eventually the course had to be
diluted due to safety issues and the Belgian GP visited
Nivelles and Zolder throughout the 1970s. When Spa
returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 1983 the circuit had
been halved with the towns of Malmedy and Stavelot now
bypassed. However, the course remains the longest
currently in Formula 1 use and is often cited as a
favorite amongst drivers and fans.
Formula 1 returns from its summer break with round 12 of
the 2012 season at Spa on Sunday, September 2nd. Going
into the Belgian GP, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is 40
points clear of Mark Webber at the top of the drivers'
championship and a further two points better off than
Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton, who is five points
adrift of Vettel, won last time out in Hungary before
Formula 1 shut down. Just behind Hamilton in Hungary was
Kimi Räikkönen who has a great record at Circuit
de Spa-Francorchamps, winning four times between 2004 and
2009.

- Four of the last ten Belgian GP has been won by the
polesitter.
