|
The British GP at Silverstone has a special place
in Formula 1 history because it was the setting for the
inaugural world championship race in 1950. The Formula 1
calendar has included a British round ever since,
something only matched by the Italian GP.
Grand Prix motor racing first made an appearance in
Britain in 1926, though, after Henry Segrave's successes
in France and San Sebastián piqued interest in the
sport. Segrave established an event at Brooklands that
year and also in 1927 but that was to be the last grand
prix in Britain until Silverstone Circuit hosted what many
recite as the first British GP of the modern era in 1948.
On May 13th, 1950, the British GP heralded a new dawn in
Formula 1 motor racing. Giuseppe Farina - who went on to
win the first Formula 1 world championship - won from pole
ahead of his fellow Alfa Romeo drivers Luigi Fagioli and
Reg Parnell. Silverstone has hosted the vast majority of
British GP since 1950 but Aintree and Brands Hatch have
also held the event.
Silverstone has always been one of the fastest circuits on
the Formula 1 calendar despite evolving over the years to
meet modern Formula 1 requirements. The most recent change
to the layout occurred in 2010, with the start/finish line
and pits relocating the following year.
The 2012 Formula 1 season continues on Sunday, July 8th
with Silverstone Circuit hosting the British GP. Double
world champion Fernando Alonso will go into the race full
of confidence after he became this season's first two-time
winner courtesy of victory at the European GP last time
out. The Valencia race saw Sebastian Vettel retire while
leading and Lewis Hamilton crash out, allowing Alonso to
open up a 20 point lead at the top of the world drivers'
championship over Mark Webber. Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber are the
last two drivers to win at Silverstone.
