Farewell, SSSS

Message Board

I created the original league that occupied this website, the American Simulation Football League on January 2nd, 2002. I was 14 at the time. Two others helped me create the league, one of which is still around (Tim Schneider), the other vanished a few months after the league began. Given the ages of those involved, the dynamic and culture of the league (and the second league on this website) was a bit different compared to the current environment.

Back then, there were only two points of interaction between league members, AIM (which members were required to have...and was actually, socially relevant at the time) and the league message board. Plenty of good-natured ribbing between those who cheered for rival teams and other inside jokes developed, with the Stupid Shit Said Section (SSSS) evolving from the general culture and camaraderie of the message board's membership.

The SSSS began when Tim posted a conversation he had had with another league member on AIM in which the other member proceeded to look like an idiot. Those type of threads would be prevalent on the SSSS through the end of the original ASFL and into the ABL era, but slowly the section evolved to include stupid humor from around the internet. Viral videos were posted, addicting games with dumb concepts, stupid news from around the world, and hilarious pranks from around the internet or even within the league.

With the league's culture having changed and the SSSS's use having dropped drastically, I've decided to retire the SSSS and merge all threads into the Free Range section on the league message board. But before I do, I wanted to bring back the best in a decade of stupid humor. I asked Tim to give me his favorite threads from the ABL message board and I've included my own favorites from the nearly ten year run as well. All external links open in a new window. If you're easily offended, I don't recommend most of them.

The SSSS came into existence before YouTube, Facebook, the death of myspace, diet coke found mentos, OK Go tried to create memes, icanhascheezburger, funnyordie.com, rickrolling, the return of Family Guy (you forgot it was cancelled once, didn't you?), and before Tosh.0 and whatever the MTV knockoff's title is summarized the best on the internet.

A lot of the entertainment of the times came from addictinggames.com, candystand.com, ebaumsworld.com, collegehumor.com, Strongbad/Homestar Runner (hi Senger), newgrounds.com, and break.com.

Now for the best of....

Tim's favorites first...

He had this to say, as well: "Over the last 6.5 years, people have grown up, matured, graduated high school, and then college. Six years ago, I was a fucking child. The SSSS proves it. Looking back on some of the threads for a few gems to post as a farewell was an embarrassment to have my name attached to. That said, I've spared myself, but if you're really interested, the old message board has them all, unfortunately."

And of course, my favorites from the original ASFL era....

I'll always be partial to Gary Brolsma's original Numa Numa, lipsynching to the most famous Moldovans that American's don't realize are singing in Romanian, or are Moldovans. The New Numa remix, is a let down, like most remakes. Here's your Romanian lesson for the day, "haiduc" means outlaw.

Closely behind is the End of the World. I still tend to begin a sentence with "HO-K, so" instead of leaving off the "h" and respond with "then fire the missiles" if someone tells me they're taking a nap. Lovely Bunch of Coconuts from the same website has stuck with me as well as an internetization of an old song.

The original Super Mario Bros. Re-Enactment is a favorite as well.

I was admittedly late to All Your Base Are Belong To Us, but it's stuck with me over the years for some reason...

Tim and I will both always have a soft spot for The Dugong Song.

And moving on to the college, ABL years...

-Angry Birds before Angry Birds from Randy Johnson to Argentina.
-RIP George Carlin, always a favorite
-Farewell, Hasselhoff, David Hasselhoff and I were a running gag. One of his songs is still one of my ringtones while another is an alarm.
-A retroactively horrible name for a diet pill from 1982.
-The famous Braves minor league manager ejection, courtesy Mark Boggs.
-Others were far bigger fans of I'm on a Boat and Dick in a Box, but they should be mentioned.
-Everyone was a big fan of Charlie the Unicorn as the biggest running gag in the league. The second and third editions weren't as good, but they're still part of the trilogy. There may or may not be more editions...I'm not sure how many on YouTube are legit at this point.
-Bloodhound Gang's Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo also provided many inside jokes and general innuendos.

Unfortunately, most of the game links haven't survived, but Line Rider was simple, addictive and entirely pointless.

Reply to this thread on the message board with your favorite internet memes from the past. Hopefully the Free Range section can pick up some activity with miscellaneous items from around the internet.
