I wanted to take a few minutes away from the fact that today is the final day of the 2010-2011 season to note the beginning of a marathon that will eventually lead to the 2014 edition of World Cup Pickem.

The first qualifier for the 2014 FIFA World Cup began at 6 PM ET today. Montserrat hosted Belize, in Trinidad, with Belize winning the first leg of their two-legged, aggregate series by a score of 5 to 2. The second leg is scheduled for 6 PM ET on Sunday in Belize, the conclusion of that game will provide the first team eliminated from the tournament. Montserrat now drops its all-time record to 2-23-1 with each of the three non-losses coming against fellow Leeward Island, Anguilla. This is also just the third time since they began international play in 1991 that they have scored more than one goal in a game.

I contemplated creating a pickem game to cover all qualifiers (832 games) leading up to the finals, but given the fact that it spans more than one ASFL2 season, the amount of games and lack of time to prepare, I decided against it. You're welcome, to those who say there are too many games already. I am leaving the possibility open of a game along those lines as a stand alone part of the website in the future, however.

You may be wondering why today's game was played in Trinidad. Well, that's due to the fact that the below images are of the fill-in national stadium of Montserrat.

The stadium has seating for 1,000 with a standing room-included capacity of 4,000, but lacks dressing rooms, which prevents it from meeting FIFA regulations. Why did I lead into the photo with the phrase "fill-in"? Because the original national stadium on the island was destroyed along with the capital city, Plymouth, in 1995 eruptions of the Soufrière Hills volcano that have subsequently resulted in more than half of the island being off limits. Montserrat has played just two of their 26 international matches on the island, both in 1995, the second of which took place just over two months before the capital city was evacuated and subsequently buried under volcanic debris.
