|
The Russian GP is a recent addition to the
Formula 1 calendar but the event's story began over a
century ago.
The first grand prix in Russia was staged in 1913 on an
18.882 mile (30.381 km) street circuit in Saint
Petersburg. The location hosted a second race the
following year, but the outbreak of the First World War
along with the Russian Civil War meant the Grand Prix was
soon consigned to history.
During the 1980s, Bernie Ecclestone wanted to stage a
Formula 1 event behind the Iron Curtain, with Moscow being
his preferred venue and it looked like a deal had been
struck to include a Grand Prix of the Soviet Union
on the 1983 calendar. However, bureaucracy scuppered the
plan and attention switched to Hungary.
At the start of the 21st century, Vladimir Putin was
interested in bringing Formula 1 to Russia, but projects
near Saint Petersburg and Moscow fell through. The Moscow Raceway was built with Formula 1
in mind but it failed to attract the series.
In 2010, Vitaly Petrov became the first Russian F1 driver
and his presence added weight behind Russia's campaign.
Later that year, a deal was finally struck to host Formula
1 from 2014.
The Sochi Autodrom, which is built around
venues used for the 2014 Winter Olympics at the Black Sea
resort, hosts the event and Daniil Kvyat ensured there was
a home driver at the inaugural race.
Round 15 of the 2015 Formula 1 season takes place this
weekend at Sochi, Russia. Last time out in Japan, Lewis
Hamilton secured a dominant victory to increase his
championship lead over Nico Rosberg, who finished second
at Suzuka, to 48 points with five races remaining.
In the inaugural F1 Russian GP last year, Lewis Hamilton
secured pole ahead of Nico Rosberg. On race day, Hamilton
got a good start but on the long run to turn two Rosberg
pulled alongside his teammate. However, Rosberg went in
too hot and overshot the corner. He had to cede the
position to Hamilton and the Brit was never headed from
then on. Rosberg had to pit at the end of lap one due to
flat-spotting his tires, but he fought his way back up the
field to take second, with Valtteri Bottas finishing
third.

2014 race facts:
- Lewis Hamilton won from pole.
- Lewis Hamilton led all 53 laps and was only headed
when Nico Rosberg illegally passed him at turn 2.
- Nico Rosberg finished second despite pitting at the
end of the first lap for his only tire change.
- Valtteri Bottas (third) and Jenson Button (fourth)
ensured the first four on the grid finished in order.
- Mercedes locked out the front row.
- Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat (14th) and Jean-Éric
Vergne (13th) both finished outside the top 10 despite
qualifying fifth and ninth respectively.
- McLaren's Kevin Magnussen finished fifth after
starting from 11th.
- Mercedes recorded a 1-2 finish, with the next best
team being McLaren, who finished 4th and 5th.
- Red Bull Racing (7th and 8th) and Ferrari (6th and
9th) also recorded double top 10 finishes.
- Felipe Massa gained the most positions, finishing
11th after starting 18th.
- There were just two retirements (Max Chilton and
Kamui Kobayashi).
- The safety car wasn't required.
