Australia has hosted grand prix racing since the
100 Miles Road Race in 1928. Classic
venues such as Phillip Island and Bathurst have been the setting for
Australia's premier motor race and Albert Park earned the honor twice in
the 1950s. The Australian GP didn't receive Formula 1
status until 1985 but the event still attracted many of
the sport's leading drivers, including world champions
Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Alan Jones and
Jackie Stewart.
When the event was finally added to the Formula 1 calendar
the Australian GP brought the season to a close and during
a ten-year period as host the Adelaide street race witnessed high
attrition and drama, most notably in the 1986 and 1994 title deciders.
The grand prix relocated to Melbourne in 1996 and it was
moved from the end of the calendar to the opening round of
the championship. The Melbourne event, raced around Albert
Park Lake, has continued the trend that was set in
Adelaide of producing races with many retirements.
If a driver is fast around the temporary street circuit,
though, then statistically they have a great chance of
going on to become world champion. Eleven out of the 19
Australian GP winners at Albert Park have gone on to
clinch that season's title and in the other eight races
six of the polesitters were subsequently crowned champion.
The 2015 Fantasy Formula 1 season begins this weekend with
the Australian GP in Melbourne, the first of 20 scheduled
races this year. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes go into the
season as defending champions and many believe it'll be
another year of Silver Arrows dominance after some ominous
performances during winter testing.
Last year Lewis Hamilton grabbed pole position in the wet
but on race day his engine was down a cylinder, leading to
an early retirement. His Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg,
took full advantage and secured a dominant victory. Daniel
Ricciardo crossed the finish line second but he was
subsequently disqualified for an illegal fuel flow. This
allowed McLaren to record a double podium finish, with
rookie Kevin Magnussen second and Jenson Button third.
Remember to make your game picks in the 2015 Fantasy Formula 1 thread
before the deadline of Saturday, March 14th at 2 AM ET,
when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Australian
GP facts and stats.
