The first running of the Brazilian GP was a
non-championship event at Interlagos, Săo Paolo in 1972. The
event joined the Formula 1 calendar a year later. After
local hero Emerson Fittipaldi won back-to-back races in
1973 and 1974, Carlos Pace continued the Brazilian winning
streak the following season. Pace died in a plane crash in
1977 and in his honor the Interlagos venue's name was
changed to Autódromo José Carlos Pace in 1985.
With the Brazilian fans getting behind Rio native Nelson
Piquet, the event transferred from Interlagos, which was
struggling to meet the modern demands of the sport, to Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro in 1981.
The venue went on to host the Grand Prix throughout the
1980s.
Following the success of another son of Săo Paulo, Ayrton
Senna, officials put into motion a revamp of Interlagos so
it could once again stage the Grand Prix. The original layout was 4.975 mi (7.960
km), comprising of long straights linked by fast corners
in between two lakes. The circuit's length was nearly halved
during the venue's modernization, but the officials got
their wish and the event moved back to Interlagos in 1990.
The 2008 race saw one of the most dramatic
finishes to the World Drivers' Championship. Felipe Massa
took the checkered flag and briefly thought he had
snatched the title from Lewis Hamilton. However, a last
lap overtake on Timo Glock saw Hamilton spoil the party,
sparking confusion and despair in the Ferrari garage.
The penultimate round of the 2014 Formula 1 season takes
place this weekend at Interlagos, Brazil, on Sunday,
November 9th. Lewis Hamilton's relentless form continued
on Sunday in Austin, winning his fifth successive race and
tenth of the season. He has now extended his lead over
teammate Nico Rosberg to 24 points, but that means the
title will be decided at the season finale in Abu Dhabi,
no matter what. In the meantime, both drivers will be
looking for their first win in Brazil.
Sebastian Vettel stormed to pole position in the wet last
year at Interlagos and after a mini battle with Nico
Rosberg on the opening lap he eased away for a record
breaking victory. Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber
eventually got past Rosberg and then Webber got the better
of Alonso to secure a Red Bull 1-2 in Webber's final
Formula 1 race.
Remember to make your game picks in the 2014 Fantasy Formula 1 thread
before the deadline of Saturday, November 8th at 11 AM ET,
when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Brazilian GP
facts and season stats.
