ASFL2 Keeper Leagues Rules - Promotion & Relegation

Signing Up | Scoring | Drafts | In-Season | Promotion & Relegation | Player Keeping | Timeline | Removal

Overview

What is Promotion & Relegation? Its a means of moving teams through different league levels that is common in European sport. It is being implemented in the ASFL2 Keeper Leagues to allow for a balance of competition in each keeper league while allowing for members to move up through the ranks and have a chance at winning the overall championship. If it weren't used, there would be separate leagues which would have to be rated against one another despite never interacting and a likely competitive imbalance of quality between leagues. This format also allows for an easier means of filling teams whose managers go inactive.

Promotion

In all non-Premier Division leagues three members will be promoted to the division directly above them.

The regular season and playoff champions will automatically be promoted with the third team being the season series winner between the regular season runner-up and the playoff runner-up. If the series was split then the aggregate totals will be used as a tiebreaker. If the same number of categories was won by each team, the regular season runner-up will be promoted. If the same two teams finish in the top two in the regular season and both reach the championship in the playoffs, the team that won the season series between the regular season third place team and the third place playoff winner will be promoted with the same tiebreakers as the runner-up season series being used.

The three members that are promoted will have to choose their new teams from those that were vacated by relegation from their new division. The final playoff standings for each team will determine the order in which each member can pick their new team. The final regular season standings will determine the order of picks in the next season's draft.

Members should want to be promoted through the lower levels to test their skills against the best at a given fantasy sport and to have a chance at winning the overall title and subsequent trophy. Those that choose to pass their promotion rights will lose a keeper spot and have a draft pick pushed back a round as a penalty. In the event of a pass, the highest ranked regular season finisher not to already have been promoted will be moved up.

Relegation

In all divisions aside from the lowest division of each sport, three members will be relegated to the division below them. In the lowest division of each sport at least one member will be replaced if there is a waiting list to join the sport. Should there be a waiting list the last place team in the final regular season standings will have its manager removed.

In situations where three members are to be relegated, the two lowest placed teams in the final regular season standings will have their managers sent down. The third manager to be sent down will be determined by the season series between the third to last placed team in the regular season standings and the team that finishes last amongst those that qualify for the consolation playoffs, aside from football. Should there be a tie in the series, the same tiebreakers as for promotion will be used. In Fantasy Football the team that scored the most points for the season between 11th and 12th in the regular season standings will be saved.

The three members that are relegated will have to choose their new teams from those that were vacated by promotion. The regular season standings will determine the order of picks of their new team. The final regular season standings will also determine the order of picks in the next season's draft with the better record getting the better pick.

The three teams whose managers get promoted will have one less keeper spot for their new managers than the other teams in the league. The spot they are missing will be filled by a supplemental draft pick two rounds after the final keeper reservation pick.

Other Circumstances

If a member is ruled to be inactive before the end of a season to the point where a replacement is deemed to be needed, there spot will be automatically relegated in pace of the last person who would be relegated otherwise.

If a member is ruled inactive and needs to be replaced after the season has ended within the commissioner's discretion based on the extent of planning that has gone into the next season, the following guidelines will take effect:

Preference will be given to a qualified, first time participant.
If a qualified new member can't be found and the empty spot needs to be filled, the first item looked at will be championship points earned in the prior season by the last person relegated from the division versus the first member not promoted from the lower division. If that scenario takes place, those members promoted will have a chance to reselect their new teams with a new team available. If this happens after the keeper selection deadline, choices will have to be made on the teams based on their players already selected to be kept, unless the team has yet to name their keeper players. If there aren't enough members to fill all available teams, the commissioner reserves the right to choose which division will field a team without a manager.

If a member receives a team after the season starts or after the draft of the team, if the member would have been placed in a higher division the commissioner can move him up to an open team in the original division he would have been placed in as of the next offseason if needed.
