Fantasy Formula 1 - United States GP Preview
10:17 AM on November 12th, 2012 by Nathan Susanto

Message Board

Motor racing in the United States of America is thought to have begun in 1895 with the running of the Thanksgiving Day Chicago Times-Herald race. The event was used to help promote the country's fledgling auto industry which had started producing automobiles just two years earlier. The "Moto Cycle" race consisted of just six competitors and the $5,000 first prize was won by J. Frank Duryea in a motor wagon built by himself and his brother Charles. Duryea completed the race's 54.36 miles (87 km) in seven hours and 53 minutes, at an average speed of 7.5 mph (12 km/h).

In the early 20th century, the Vanderbilt Cup, founded by William Kissam Vanderbilt, soon became one of the world's leading motor races, attracting competitors from across the Atlantic. The event experienced crowd control problems, though, and the injuries and deaths of spectators caused its cancellation in 1907. The following year, the organizers declined to adopt the new Grand Prix regulations, leading to the rival Automobile Club of Americas running the American Grand Prize, raced under Grand Prix rules. The event was held seven times but disappeared after 1916.

The United States found itself on the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship calendar in 1950 when the Indianapolis 500 was included in the seven race series. This continued through to 1960, but with the event starting to clash with the prestigious Monaco GP, it was eventually dropped. However, that didn't stop prominent Formula 1 drivers such as Graham Hill competing when it was possible.

By this time the United States had created a grand prix race, first held in 1958 at the Riverside International Raceway in California. The next year the event was included on the Formula 1 calendar as the final race of the season. That event was held in Sebring, Florida and the following year it moved back to Riverside, but the grand prix soon found a permanent home at Watkins Glen in New York State.

In 1976, a Formula 1 event in Long Beach, California was created and it was named the United States Grand Prix West, to distinguish it from the Watkins Glen race, which was dubbed the United States Grand Prix East. The Glen event came to an end in 1980, but Formula 1 continued to race at Long Beach until 1983. The Detroit GP, raced on the city's streets, was held between 1982 and 1988 and there was a Dallas event in 1984. In 1989, the series moved to Phoenix but that race was discontinued in 1991.

Formula 1 returned to the Brickyard in 2000, using a newly constructed infield section. The event was initially seen as a success but a controversial 2005 race - where only six cars took to the starting grid because manufacturer Michelin had provided seven teams with tires deemed unsafe - cast doubts over the grand prix's future despite the organizers being blameless. The race was dropped after the 2007 season.

It seemed inconceivable to many that Formula 1 would move forward without a race in the United States and plans for a return were soon on the table. In 2010, Bernie Ecclestone announced a race would be held in New York City in 2012, but Austin was awarded a contract later that year. The construction of America's first purpose-built Formula 1 track hasn't been without its issues, but the venue was given the thumbs up in September 2012. The United States was due to have a second event in 2013 - held in Hudson County, New Jersey, with Ecclestone's highly-coveted backdrop of Manhattan - but it was announced in October 2012 that the event would be postponed until 2014.

Formula 1 returns to the United States for the first time in five years at the newly-constructed Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas this weekend. The drivers' title could be decided at this season's penultimate race with double world champions Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso the only ones remaining in the hunt despite Kimi Räikkönen achieving his first victory since 2009 last time out in Abu Dhabi. Vettel currently leads Alonso by ten points, meaning a second place finish in Austin for the Red Bull Racing driver could be enough to secure a third championship in a row.

Remember to make your game picks in the 2012 Fantasy Formula 1 thread before the deadline of Saturday, November 17th at 12:55 PM ET, five minutes before qualifying begins. Here we run down some United States GP facts and season stats.

Circuit of the Americas facts:
  • Circuit of the Americas is a Hermann Tilke track but was conceived by Tavo Hellmund and Kevin Schwantz.
  • The venue - on the outskirts of Austin, Texas - is the United States' first purpose-built Formula 1 circuit.
  • At 3.427 mi (5.516 km), the track is the eighth longest on the 2012 Formula 1 calendar.
  • The Elroy property is undulating and there's a rise of 133 ft (40 m) from the start/finish straight to turn 1.
  • Turn 1 is inspired by the original Österreichring's opening corner.
  • The circuit then sweeps down into turn 2, reminiscent of the Senna 'S' at Interlagos.
  • Sector 1 is completed by esses which pays homage to the Maggots-Becketts-Chapel section at Silverstone.
  • Turn 10 is a downhill, blind apex corner.
  • The back straight between turns 11 and 12 is 1.2 km (0.75 mi), flanked by RV parking.
  • At the end of the straight comes a small replica of Hockenheimring's Motodrom stadium section.
  • Turns 16-18 is a triple apex corner; a faster version of Tilke's much lauded Turn 8 at Istanbul.
