|
There was limited motor racing history on the
Korean peninsula prior to the country's inaugural Formula
1 grand prix in 2010. Neighboring Macau had hosted grand
prix street racing at various formulas since the 1950s,
and the Macau GP has become one of the biggest events on
the motor racing calendar with hundreds of drivers and
riders turning up to take on the challenging street
circuit layout.
At the end of the 1990s it was decided teams needed to
find a way to cut their budgets and so it was decided an
end of season double-header should be organized to lower
travel costs. The destination chosen for this twin event
with Macua was the Republic of Korea, giving birth to the
Korea Super Prix. The event was first run in 1999 and in
its five years of existence it saw a few future Formula 1
drivers participate like Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.
In 2006 Korea struck a deal to bring Formula 1 to the
country and Hermann Tilke was drafted in to design a
circuit in Yeongam, near the port city of Mokpo. The
inaugural event was penciled in on the 2010 calendar but
construction problems arose, primarily due to the region's
inclement weather. The original deadline for the venue's
completion came and went but the organizers were then
given until 13 days before the grand prix was due to be
held. They eventually got the thumbs up from the FIA but
the venue had a very minimalist look when the Formula 1
circus rolled into town and little had changed when the
sport returned in 2011 amid rumors that the organizers
wanted to renegotiate their original seven year deal.
The Korea International Circuit in Yeongam will host round
sixteen of the 2012 Formula 1 season on Sunday, October
14th. Sebastian Vettel took a big step towards securing a
third successive drivers' title when he recorded a
dominant victory at Suzuka in round fifteen. It made the
Red Bull driver the first competitor to win back-to-back
grands prix this season after Vettel also took the
checkered flag first in Singapore. Fernando Alonso still
tops the standings but he now leads by a mere four points
after being eliminated at the first corner for the second
time in four races.
