|
Motor racing around the streets of Singapore can
be traced back to when the Southeast Asian city-state was
still part of the Malayan federation. The Orient Year GP,
as it was known in 1961, was held at the Thomson Road
Circuit but it was renamed the Malaysian GP the following
year. After Singapore gained its independence from
Malaysia in 1965, the event was called the Singapore GP
and it continued to run until 1973.
Those initial races were run under Formula Libre rules and
it wasn't until the 21st century before talks began to
bring Formula 1 to the tiny republic. A deal was struck in
2007 and the first Formula 1 event in Singapore was held
the next season. That inaugural race became historic
because it was the series' first grand prix to be run at
night. The time difference (UTC+8) meant that it was run
at the same time as European grands prix, meaning the live
broadcast would be at a convenient time for the sport's
largest fan base.
The 2008 event was won by Fernando Alonso after he had
started down in 15th on the grid. However, a year later it
was discovered Alonso's Renault teammate at the time,
Nelson Piquet Jr., had been asked by the team to
deliberately crash his car to trigger a safety car period.
This would help Alonso - who had already made a pit stop -
move up the field while the leaders pitted. Renault -
which has since morphed into Lotus F1 - was handed a
suspended ban for race fixing and team principal Flavio
Briatore and engineer Pat Symonds were banished from the
sport, although their bans were subsequently overturned.
Formula 1 heads east for the fourteenth round of the 2012
season. The Singapore GP, held under the lights at Marina
Bay, will take place on Sunday, September 23rd at 8 AM ET.
Fernando Alonso - a two-time winner around the streets of
Singapore - still tops the drivers' standings but his
nearest challenger now is Lewis Hamilton, who won the
final race in Europe at Monza. The Ferrari driver's lead
looks healthy at 37 points, but the chasing pack is
closely bunched with Hamilton only one point ahead of Kimi
Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel a further point
behind.
