|
The Italian GP is one of Europe's longest running
motor races. The city of Brescia played host to the
inaugural event in 1921 but the venue switched to Monza
the following year. The purpose-built Autodromo Nazionale
Monza - which cuts its way through a woodland setting in
the Royal Villa Monza Park - was originally 6.213 miles
(10 km), combining a road track with a banked oval. The
high speed layout soon became synonymous with fatalities,
though, and they halted use of the full configuration in
1933.
The banked oval section was revived in 1955 but when
Wolfgang von Trips died along with 15 spectators at the
1961 event, that spelt the end of the steeply-banked Pista
di Alta Velocita, even though the accident didn't occur
there. Unfortunately, further deaths marred racing at
Monza, including that of Jochen Rindt, a month before he
was crowned the 1970 Formula 1 champion.
The European leg of the 2012 Formula 1 season concludes at
the Italian GP on Sunday, September 9th. The thirteenth
round of the 20 event season takes place at the Autodromo
Nazionale Monza, which is still the fastest circuit on the
Formula 1 calendar. The series' fastest average speed for
a pole lap, race lap and race have all been recorded at
the historic venue.
Two-time Italian GP winner Fernando Alonso still leads the
drivers' world championship but his advantage was cut at
the weekend when he experienced his first non-finish of
the season after being caught up in the first corner melee
caused by Romain Grosjean. It was Grosjean's seventh first
lap incident of the year and he was handed a one-race ban
to be served at the Monza event. Lotus will replace the
Frenchman with Jérôme d'Ambrosio, who drove
for Virgin Racing last season.
