|
Hungary's link to grand prix motor racing can be
traced back to the very first event to be designated grand
prix status. The 1906 French GP held at Le Mans was won by
Hungarian Ferenc Szisz, driving a Renault. It was to be
his sole grand prix success but Szisz will forever be
ingrained in grand prix motor racing folklore.
The first grand prix to be held in Hungary was organized
in 1936. The event ran around the Népliget park in
Budapest and attracted the likes of Auto Union (now Audi),
Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. Legendary Italian driver Tazio
Nuvolari triumphed that day but grand prix motor racing
disappeared from Hungary for the next five decades due to
the political situation in the region.
The Hungarian GP made its first appearance on the Formula
1 calendar in 1986 when it became clear a race in Moscow
wasn't going to happen. This was the first occasion
Formula 1 held an event behind the Iron Curtain. The
Hungaroring circuit 11 mi (18 km) from Budapest has hosted
every edition of the Hungarian GP since the inaugural race
in 1986.
Round 11 of the 2012 Formula 1 season takes place at the
Hungaroring on Sunday, July 29th before the compulsory
shutdown in August. Fernando Alonso is almost certain to
lead the drivers' championship going into the summer break
after increasing his advantage at the top of the standings
with victory at the German GP last time out. The Ferrari
driver now leads Mark Webber, who could only finish eighth
at Hockenheim, by 24 points, with 25 points up for grabs
for a win this weekend in Hungary.

- The polesitter has won five of the last 11 Hungarian
