|
Inevitably, Germany was at the forefront of motor
racing in Europe around the turn of the 20th century.
Between 1907 and 1911, precursors to the German GP were
held such as the Kaiserpreis, hosted at the Taunus
Circuit, and the Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt, which was solely
for production touring cars.
The inaugural German GP was in 1926 at the AVUS (Automobil
Verkehrs und Übungs-Straße) race circuit,
Berlin, which runs through the Grunewald forest. The race
was won by German Rudolf Caracciola in a Mercedes Benz.
The event moved to the 17.563 mi (28.265 km)
Nürburgring Gesamtstrecke the following year and a
German once again took the victory in a Mercedes Benz. The
legendary Nordschleife configuration of the
Nürburgring was first used for the German GP in 1931
but the event came to an abrupt halt due to World War II.
The German GP was eventually added to the Formula 1 world
championship calendar in 1951, after the country's ban
from international events was lifted. The Nordschleife was
one again the host venue but it soon fell out of favor due
to its dangers. Ironically, its replacement - the fast
Hockenheimring - was also highly dangerous and it was the
scene of Jim Clark's death (in a Formula 2 race), a driver
many considered one of Formula 1's finest.
The Hockenheimring was soon forced to change when it
became clear safety, security and spectator's viewing
needed to be improved. Despite the upgrades, though, the
shortened circuit has been criticized by many but a return
to the old configuration is now impossible after it was
destroyed, with the forest taking its place.
The German GP on Sunday, July 22nd signals the halfway
point of the 2012 Formula 1 calendar. Fernando Alonso
still sits on top of the championship standings but Mark
Webber closed the gap with victory at the British GP in
round nine. Alonso limited the damage, though, by
receiving the checkered flag second.
The last time the Formula 1 circus visited the
Hockenheimring was in 2010 and it proved to be a
controversial grand prix. Fernando Alonso triumphed but
only after his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, who had led
for 40 out of 48 laps, slowed down on lap 49 after a coded
message on the radio. Team orders were banned that season
and Ferrari were handed a $100,000 fine. However, Alonso's
win, with Massa in second, was allowed to stand.
