|
The fifth and in all likelihood final European GP
to be hosted at the Valencia Street Circuit will be run
this year but the origins of the event dates back to the
1920s. Back then the name was merely an honorific title
and the first race to be designated as the European GP was
the Italian GP in 1923. France, Belgium and San
Sebastián were given the title in subsequent years
but the practise was discontinued after the Spa event of
1930.
The FIA decided to revive the title in 1947, with the
Belgian GP once again being bestowed with the honor. Apart
from 1953 and 1969-71, the European GP was held every year
at venues ranging from Switzerland, Germany, Monaco, the
Netherlands and Austria. The 1977 British GP was the last
event to be given the honorific title.
When the European GP returned in 1983 it was only to fill
a gap in the calendar left by the canceled event scheduled
to take place near Flushing Meadows Park in New York.
Brands Hatch in Great Britain stepped up, while the 1984
race took place at the Nürburgring GP-Strecke layout.
The grand prix returned to Brands Hatch in 1985 but it was
no longer needed after that season due to the introduction
of the Hungarian GP.
The next appearance of the European GP came in 1993 as
another stopgap, this time replacing the failed Asian GP.
It again was held in Great Britain but, after visiting
Jerez in Spain a couple of times, the race found a
permanent home at the Nürburgring. The event was to
be dropped in 2007 but that season's German GP was named
the European GP due to a naming rights dispute. Valencia
took over in 2008 and was contracted to hold the event
until 2014, but Spain has decided to alternate the Spanish
GP between Circuit de Catalunya and the Valencia Street
Circuit from 2013.
Round eight of the open 2012 Formula 1 season takes place
on the streets of Valencia's harbor and America's Cup port
area on June 24th. Lewis Hamilton became the latest winner
this season by securing victory in Canada. That means it
is now seven different winners in the opening seven races,
further lengthening the record. The triumph gave Hamilton
the lead in the drivers' standings, just ahead of Fernando
Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. The chances of this unique
stretch of winners continuing into an eighth grand prix
might seem remote but the podium in Canada was completed
by Romain Grosjean and Sergio Pérez, two drivers
who have bagged a pair of top-3 finishes already this
season.
