|
The inaugural Canadian GP was run in 1961 and for
the first six years it was a sports car event. Its home
was Mosport Park, a purpose-built road course near Toronto
and the race attracted star names from the world of sports
car and Formula 1 such as Stirling Moss, Pedro
Rodríguez and Phil Hill.
The event was eventually given Formula 1 status in 1967
with the grand prix once again being held at Mosport Park.
It alternated with Circuit Mont-Tremblant until 1970 but
it was then held exclusively at Mosport Park until 1977.
The race that year, though, saw Ian Ashley involved in a
serious accident and it became apparent the safety at the
fast track wasn't good enough. A new circuit was built in
Montreal in time to host the 1978 event.
That venue was the Íle Notre-Dame Circuit, since
renamed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after the Canadian
Formula 1 driver died in 1982, situated at Parc
Jean-Drapreau on a man-made island in the St. Lawrence
River. The layout is narrow by modern standards and
instead of vast asphalt run-off areas the circuit is lined
by walls. The wall that runs alongside the start/finish
straight was dubbed "Mur du Québec" (Quebec Wall)
due to it bearing the slogan Bienvenue au Québec
("Welcome to Quebec"). However, during the 1999 event
three world champions, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and
Jaques Villeneuve saw their race end in the same spot,
leading to the wall being renamed "The Wall of Champions".
The Canadian GP will host the seventh round of the 2012
Formula 1 season on June 10th. A year ago, Sebastian
Vettel opened his campaign with five wins in the first six
races, giving him a 58 point lead, on his way to an
inevitable second consecutive world title. Twelve months
on and we have the antithesis to last year's
inevitability.
For the first time in Formula 1 history there have been
six different winners in the opening six grands prix,
resulting in the leading six competitors in the standings
being separated by just 25 points. The winner last time
out was Red Bull's Mark Webber, following Jenson Button,
Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel and Pastor
Maldonado into the 2012 winners' circle. With the likes of
Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen - who have
both triumphed at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the past -
still to win this season, a seventh different winner this
weekend would come as no surprise.
