|
The Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco in 1929 was
the brainchild of Anthony Noghés in an attempt to
gain full national status for the Automobile Club de
Monaco. The invitation only event was run around the
narrow and undulating streets of Monte Carlo and La
Condamine, with the principality's harbor as the backdrop
for the second half of the circuit. In 1933, the race was
elevated to the exclusive Grandes Épreuves status,
confirming its place as one of Europe's premier motor
races. The grand prix featured in Formula 1's first world
championship in 1950 and it has been ever present since
1955.
The unique characteristics of the Circuit de Monaco have
remained mostly unchanged over the past eight decades.
Aside from some corners being reprofiled, the only major
change to the circuit's layout came in 1973 when the
Piscine section was added and the final corner was
altered. Despite being Formula 1's shortest track at 2.075
miles (3.34 km), the circuit is considered as one of the
most demanding on the calendar. Typically, a driver will
make over 4,000 gear changes throughout the duration of
the race while getting as close as they dare to the
unforgiving barriers.
The jewel in Formula 1's crown, the Monaco GP, takes place
on Sunday, May 27th. The original racing "King of Monaco"
was Graham Hill thanks to his victories around the
principality's streets in 1963-65, and 1968-69. The
two-time world champion is also the only driver to
complete motor racing's Triple Crown after adding the 1966
Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1972 to his
Monaco successes. Hill's five Monaco victories were
unrivaled until Ayrton Senna won six in seven years
between 1987 and 1993. Michael Schumacher matched Hill's
quintet of triumphs, winning in 1994-95, 1997, 1999 and
2001, but no driver has won more than two since.
