|
When the Bahrain GP was held in 2004, it became the first Formula 1 event to be hosted in a Middle East country. The venue's construction was initiated by the Crown Prince, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and he was instrumental in bringing Formula 1 to his nation. Like so many of Formula 1's new complexes, the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir is a Hermann Tilke design and it features many different layouts, including a 1.25 mile flat oval. In 2010, the Formula 1 event was run using the lengthened "Endurance Circuit". However, the new bumpy, twisty section was widely criticized by drivers, media and the audience and so in 2011 it was to revert back to the layout used between 2004 and 2009.
In December 2010, though, the Arab Spring began and it quickly
spread throughout North Africa and the Middle East. An
uprising broke out in Bahrain on February 14th, 2011, less
than one month before the nation was scheduled to open
that year's Formula 1 calendar. On February 21st, it was
decided the race should be postponed and, despite the
FIA's plan to reschedule the event to October, it was
eventually confirmed it would not take place at all in
2011.
After much speculation and conflicting stories, the FIA has confirmed the Bahrain GP will
go ahead as planned on April 22nd. Undoubtedly,
there are still problems in the small island nation but
the sport's governing body believes it is safe for Formula
1 to return. Ferrari has been the dominant force in
Bahrain ever since the Scuderia recorded a 1-2 finish in
the race's first running in 2004. Michael Schumacher edged
out Rubens Barrichello on that day and Felipe Massa along
with Kimi Räikkönen repeated the trick for
Ferrari in 2008. The last time Formula 1 convened in
Bahrain in 2010, Felipe Massa had to play second fiddle to
Fernando Alonso as the double world champion was
victorious on his Ferrari debut.
