|
The Chinese government's desire for a Formula 1
grand prix dates back to the early 1990s. A motor racing
event for cars and motorcycles had been held on the
streets of Macau - one of China's Special Administrative
Regions - since the mid-1950s, where the likes of Ayrton
Senna and Michael Schumacher had been triumphant. The
location chosen for the Chinese GP was Zhuhai, a short
distance from the streets of Macau. The Zhuhai
International Circuit was built and provisionally the
Chinese GP was penciled in for the 1999 Formula 1
calendar. However, due to logistical reasons, the venue
failed to meet FIA standards and Formula 1 wasn't to visit
China until the 21st century.
Three years later, Formula 1 struck a deal with the
Shanghai International Circuit, located in the Jiading
District in the northwestern part of the most populous
city in the world. The track is another Hermann Tilke
creation and was inspired by the Chinese character shang
(上), meaning "above" or "ascend". Along with the circuits
at Sepang and Istanbul, it's generally considered as one
of Tilke's better designs and the last two races have seen
plenty of action throughout the field.
This Sunday will be the ninth running of the Chinese GP
after it made its debut in 2004. That inaugural Shanghai
race saw Michael Schumacher start from the pitlane for the
first time in his career as he failed to set a qualifying
time. The seven-time champion struggled to 12th while his
Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello took the checkered
flag. In 2007, Lewis Hamilton - who had started from pole
- looked to be on the verge of the world title in his
maiden season but he stayed out too long on wet tires and
when he finally came in for slicks, he beached his McLaren
in a gravel trap by the pitlane, ending his race.

- The polesitter has won four out of eight races at
Shanghai.
- Only one polesitter has failed to finish the Chinese
