This year will be the 17th time the Australian GP
has been staged at Albert Park Lake, two miles south of
the heart of Melbourne. Formula 1 has been a fixture in
the country since 1985, however, and Australia's grand
prix history dates back to over eighty years ago.
The first grand prix event in Australia was the 1928 100
Miles Road Race held on Phillip Island. Over the
next half a century, the nation's grand prix moved around
the country and was hosted at circuits such as Bathurst,
while Albert Park was the venue in 1953 and 1956. Although
the race didn't have the Formula 1 tag, some of the
sport's biggest names came to compete. The likes of Jack
Brabham, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart were
all victorious and Stirling Moss prevailed at Albert Park.
The Australian GP finally received Formula 1 status in
1985 and for eleven years the teams convened in Adelaide
to lower the curtain on the season around the city's
streets. In 1996, the event transferred from Adelaide to
Melbourne and changed from being the final round on the
calendar to the first. Since then, Australia has hosted
the opening race of the season every year bar two.
The 63rd Formula 1 season gets underway at the Melbourne
Grand Prix Circuit on March 18th. Twelve months ago, we
got a taste of things to come for the season ahead when
Sebastian Vettel stormed to pole and then cruised to
victory by a comfortable margin over McLaren's Lewis
Hamilton. The Red Bull Racing driver subsequently notched
up his second consecutive world crown after adding ten
further victories. This venue has a history of foretelling
the eventual World Drivers' Champion. In the sixteen
Formula 1 grands prix held at Albert Park, 11 of the
winners have gone on to clinch the title. In the five
other races, four of the drivers who secured pole position
went on to be crowned champion.
Remember to make your game picks in the 2012 Fantasy Formula 1 thread
before the deadline of Saturday, March 17th at 1:55 AM ET,
five minutes before qualifying begins.
