|
The Belgian GP takes Formula 1 to one of
the most revered circuits on the calendar, a venue that's
been a site for motor racing since the 1920s. Circuit de
Spa-Francorchamps, located in the unpredictable climate of
the Ardennes forest, was designed in 1920, using the
public roads that connected the towns of Spa, Malmedy and
Stavelot. The triangular 9.31 mile (14.9 km) layout
initially hosted motorcycling events, but the Spa 24 Hours was created on the back of
the success of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and made its debut
in 1924. The following year, the Belgian GP was
established.
The original layout, which was lined by trees, farmland
and fields, rural houses and included the frightening
Masta Kink chicane, was the fastest road circuit in
Europe. The lack of safety, though, led to the drivers
withdrawing from the 1969 event. The race returned the
following season but that year was to be the final Grand
Prix at Spa for over a decade.
The Belgian GP switched to Nivelles and Zolder
but Spa was sufficiently revamped for the race to return
there in 1983. The new circuit is half the length of the
original, bypassing the towns of Malmedy and Stavelot.
However, it's managed to keep much of its character, with
the exciting Eau Rouge/Raidillon and Blanchimont corners
remaining, and the venue is widely cited as a favorite
amongst drivers and fans.
The 2015 Formula 1 season gets back on track at Spa this
weekend. Before the summer break, the Hungarian GP served
up an eventful race with Sebastian Vettel taking an
emotional victory. Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing recorded
their first podiums of the year, with Daniil Kvyat
securing a career-best second and Daniel Ricciardo
finishing third. Despite an erratic performance,
championship leader Lewis Hamilton (6th) increased his
lead by bettering Nico Rosberg (8th).
Nico Rosberg grabbed the 2014 pole in the wet but Lewis
Hamilton beat him into turn one on race day. On lap 2,
Rosberg challenged Hamilton going into Les Combes and the
teammates collided, with Hamilton suffering a puncture and
Rosberg front wing damage. Daniel Ricciardo took advantage
of the clash, going on to win. Rosberg was able to recover
to finish second and Valtteri Bottas came home third.
Meanwhile, Hamilton's collision damage proved terminal.

- Three of the last ten Belgian GP has been won by the
polesitter.
