|
Spain gained a strong motor racing fan base when
the sport developed at the turn of the 20th century. Early
events included the Catalan Cup, but the country's first
grand prix event was held in 1913 on a 186 mile (300 km)
road circuit at Guadarrama, in the Community
of Madrid. The next Spanish GP was organized ten years
later at the purpose-built Autódromo de Sitges-Terramar oval
track. The race then moved to a permanent home in 1926 at
Circuito Lasarte but it was
discontinued after the 1935 European Championship event.
Since Spain was added to the Formula 1 calendar in 1951,
the country's premier event has been hosted by a variety
of venues. Ultimately, though, the exciting street
circuits of Pedralbes and Montjuïc were too dangerous and Circuito del Jarama was deemed too
narrow for a modern track.
In 1991, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, in
Montmeló, took over hosting duties from Jerez. Those two circuits have also
held pre-season winter testing in recent years. It was
proposed Catalunya should alternate as host with the Valencia Street Circuit - the venue of
the European GP between 2008 and 2012 - to
cut down on costs. However, Valencia dropped out of the
agreement due to economic reasons prior to the 2013 event
and so Catalunya continues to be the exclusive host, while
Valencia remains off the calendar for now.
The 2015 Formula 1 season reaches European shores, with
round 5 being staged in Spain this weekend. Lewis Hamilton
continued his domination last time out in Bahrain,
recording his third victory of the campaign, ahead of Kimi
Räikkönen and Nico Rosberg.
After claiming pole, Lewis Hamilton led the 2014 Spanish
GP from the off and his Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg,
couldn't quite put him under pressure early on. However,
Rosberg had the faster option tires in the final stint and
slowly reeled Hamilton in. The Silver Arrows were
separated by less than a second in the closing stages but
Rosberg didn't get close enough to make a decisive move.
Third-placed Daniel Ricciardo finished nearly 50 seconds
off the pace.

- The polesitter has won 12 out of the last 14 Spanish
GP.
- Only six polesitters have failed to win at
Catalunya.
