Fantasy Formula 1 - Malaysian GP Preview
5:56 AM on March 23rd, 2015 by Nathan Susanto

Message Board

The roots of the Malaysian GP can be traced back to a Formula 2 event held at Singapore's Thomson Road Grand Prix circuit in the early 1960s. After Singapore gained its independence in 1965, Malaysia's premier motor race was organized at the Batu Tiga Speedway Circuit. Between 1968 and 1982 the venue hosted grands prix run under various different categories such as Formula Atlantic and Formula Pacific, but the Malaysian GP was held only once between 1983 and 1998.

When Malaysia earned a Formula 1 berth in 1999 it was the first time the series would hold an Asian event outside of Japan. The Sepang International Circuit, located just south of the country's capital city Kuala Lumpur, has hosted every race since the inaugural event. Initially, the Grand Prix was held near the season's conclusion in October but it's been part of the opening flyaway events since 2001.

The move to an early slot in the calendar means the Northeast Monsoon is still circulating in the region during the race weekend and so a few events at Sepang have been affected by a seasonal deluge. The chaos in the early stages of the 2001 race was mild compared to the 2009 event, which was stopped after only 31 of the scheduled 56 laps had been completed, making it the fifth shortest Formula 1 grand prix.

Round 2 of the 2015 Formula 1 season is this weekend, taking place at Sepang, Malaysia. Lewis Hamilton's and Mercedes' form was ominous at the opening event in Australia, with Hamilton leading his teammate Nico Rosberg in a Silver Arrows 1-2. While Mercedes is comfortably out in front, things look close between Ferrari and Williams, with Sebastian Vettel taking the final podium place in his first race for the Scuderia, ahead of Williams' Felipe Massa.

Lewis Hamilton snatched pole position during wet qualifying a Sepang in 2014 but it was dry on race day and he produced an imperious performance, delivering his first ever F1 Grand Chelem: pole, lights to flag victory and the fastest lap. Hamilton's teammate Nico Rosberg squeezed past Sebastian Vettel on the opening lap and eventually crossed the line a distant second. Vettel, who had kept Rosberg honest for some of the race, had to settle for third place.

Remember to make your game picks in the 2015 Fantasy Formula 1 thread before the deadline of Saturday, March 28th at 5 AM ET, when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Malaysian GP facts and season stats.
