|
In 1904, nine years after the United States' first auto race, the Vanderbilt Cup was founded, attracting
drivers from Europe along with homegrown racers.
Organizers declined to adopt Grand Prix regulations in
1908, prompting rival Automobile Club of America to create
the American Grand Prize, giving birth to
the United States GP. It only survived until 1916, though.
By this time, the Indianapolis 500 was established. The
event figured in the inaugural Formula 1 World
Championship in 1950 but was dropped from the calendar
after 1960 because it normally clashed with Europe's
prestigious Monaco GP.
The US GP was resurrected in 1958 and joined the F1
calendar the following year. The event found a home at Watkins Glen after Riverside and Sebring had originally played host. The
1976 season saw the addition of the United States GP West at Long Beach. The race at the Glen ceased
in 1980 and three years later the Long Beach event ended,
but the US also staged F1 Grands Prix at Caesars Palace, Detroit and Dallas during the 1980s. In 1989, the
US GP resurfaced but the unpopular Phoenix event soon disbanded.
The Brickyard welcomed back Formula 1 in 2000, using a
newly-constructed infield section. It was initially a
success, but a farcical 2005 race cast doubts over the event's
future despite the organizers being blameless. The
inevitable end came in 2007.
In 2010, it was announced New York City would stage an
event. The contract eventually went to Austin, though, and
the United States' first purpose-built Formula 1 track, Circuit of the Americas, was constructed on the outskirts of
the Texan city. The streets of New Jersey, boasting the
coveted Manhattan backdrop, were proposed as the venue for
a second event for 2013, but that remains
an unrealized dream.
The United States hosts round 17 of the 2014 Formula 1
season, with the Circuit of the Americas staging the race
on Sunday, November 2nd. Mercedes wrapped up the World
Constructors' Championship in Russia and now its pilots,
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, will go head-to-head for
the drivers' crown. Hamilton has been edging away,
courtesy of another run of four consecutive wins and he'll
hope to continue the streak at a venue where he's tasted
success before.
At last year's United States GP, Red Bull locked out the
front row of the grid, but while polesitter Sebastian
Vettel made the perfect start, Mark Webber was overtaken
around the outside of turn one by Romain Grosjean and
Lewis Hamilton. Adrian Sutil triggered the safety car on lap 1, but when the race restarted
Sebastian Vettel eased away from the field. Webber
eventually found a way past Hamilton but he couldn't catch
Grosjean, who secured second place.

Austin facts:
- The polesitter has won one out of two Austin races.
