The Russian GP is the newest addition to the
Formula 1 calendar but the event's story began over a
century ago.
The first grand prix on Russian soil was staged in 1913 on
an 18.882 mile (30.381 km) street circuit in Saint
Petersburg. The location hosted a second race the
following year, but the outbreak of the First World War
along with the Russian Civil War meant the Grand Prix was
soon consigned to history.
During the 1980s, Bernie Ecclestone wanted to stage a
Formula 1 event behind the Iron Curtain, with Moscow being
his preferred venue and it looked like a deal had been
struck to include a Grand Prix of the Soviet Union
on the 1983 calendar. However, bureaucracy scuppered the
plan and attention switched to Hungary.
At the start of the 21st century, Vladimir Putin was
interested in bringing Formula 1 to Russia, but projects
near Saint Petersburg and on the outskirts of Moscow
eventually fell through. The Moscow Raceway, 60 miles (98 km) from
the capital, opened in 2012 but failed to attract the
series.
Russia finally secured a deal to host Formula 1 from 2014
at Sochi Autodrom, which is built around
venues used for the 2014 Winter Olympics at the Black Sea
resort. The circuit was given the green light in August
2014, seven weeks ahead of its inaugural grand prix.
A century after its last event, the Russian GP is
resurrected for round 16 of the 2014 Formula 1 season,
with Winter Olympic venue Sochi staging the race on
Sunday, October 12th.
With just four races remaining of the 2014 Formula 1
season, Lewis Hamilton is gradually edging closer to his
second title. The Mercedes pilot has won the last three
races, but his victory at Suzuka on Sunday was
overshadowed by the serious accident of Jules Bianchi.
The Marussia driver aquaplaned off the track and struck a
recovery vehicle, which was attending to Adrian Sutil's
stricken car. It was announced Bianchi suffered a severe head injury and
underwent surgery. There was no further official news on his
condition as of Monday morning.
