|
Despite the fact that Hungary didn't appear on
the Formula 1 calendar until 1986, the country has a
unique link to the first ever race to be recognized as a
Grand Prix. That inaugural event was the 1906 French GP, held on roads outside
of Le Mans and the winner at the end of the marathon two
days was the Hungarian Ferenc Szisz. It was to be his only
Grand Prix success but Szisz will forever be enshrined in
motor racing folklore.
Hungary first staged a Grand Prix in 1936. The event ran around the Népliget Park in Budapest and the
Italian legend Tazio Nuvolari triumphed on the street
circuit. However, the event promptly disappeared and it
didn't return for five decades due to the region's
political situation.
Bernie Ecclestone had ambitions to take Formula 1 to the
Soviet Union, but it became apparent a race in Moscow was
not forthcoming and so a deal was brokered to hold an
event in Hungary. When the Hungarian GP became a fixture
on the 1986 calendar, it was to be the first time Formula
1 would take place behind the Iron Curtain.
The Hungaroring hosted the ground-breaking
1986 event and it's remained as the race's venue ever
since. Overtaking is at a premium on the twisty and dusty
track, but Nigel Mansell won from 12th on the grid in 1989 and Jenson Button secured his
maiden victory in mixed conditions in 2006 having begun in 14th.
With the summer break approaching, the 2014 Formula 1
season hits the twisty Hungaroring near Budapest for round
11 on Sunday, July 27th. Nico Rosberg is in a good
position to lead the championship heading into the break
after a comfortable win in Germany. His closest rival
Lewis Hamilton had to battle through the field after a
disatrous qualifying session, eventually coming home third
behind the in-form Valtteri Bottas.
Twelve months ago, Lewis Hamilton grabbed pole position
and he led the race ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Romain
Grosjean until the first round of stops. As he exited the
pits, Hamilton swiftly overtook Jenson Button, a move
which would prove crucial. Vettel wasn't so efficient
after his first stop and he got stuck behind Button for
several laps. This gave Hamilton the advantage and he
consolidated it by pulling off a great overtake on Mark
Webber after his final stop. The Mercedes driver took the
checkered flag ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and a frustrated
Vettel.

- The polesitter has won the last two Hungarian GP,
but only three of the last nine.
