|
With Germany intrinsically linked with the modern
automobile, inevitably, it was at the forefront of
European motor racing at the turn of the 20th century. The
country hosted the 1904 Gordon Bennett Cup, and the Kaiserpreis and the
Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt, precursors to the German GP, were
subsequently organized.
The inaugural German GP in 1926 was held at the AVUS
(Automobil Verkehrs und Übungs-Straße) circuit. The
following year the race moved to the 17.563 mile (28.265
km), 174 turn Nürburgring Gesamtstrecke and it was
then run on the Nordschleife configuration from 1931.
The event came to an abrupt halt, though, with the
outbreak of World War II.
The Grand Prix was resurrected in 1950 but it didn't
feature in the opening Formula 1 World Championship
because of Germany's international sporting ban. However,
sanctions were lifted in time for the race to be included
the following season and since then Germany has staged a
Formula 1 race every year expect for 1955 and 1960,
although the 2007 event ran under the European GP
banner.
The Green Hell Nordschleife fell out of favor in
the late-1970s after numerous accidents provided stark
reminders of the circuit's dangers. Ironically, its
replacement, the Hockenheimring, had its own problems
and the site underwent sweeping changes ahead of the 2002
season.
In 2008 Hockenheim started alternating as host venue with
the Nürburgring GP-Strecke, which has also
staged the European GP and the Luxembourg GP, despite being over 50
miles (80 km) away from the small nation.
The halfway point of the 2014 Formula 1 season has been
reached, with round ten taking us to Germany where they'll
race at the Hockenheimring on Sunday, July 20th. Lewis
Hamilton got back to winning ways last time out in
Britain, hauling himself to within four points of
championship leader Nico Rosberg, who suffered his first
retirement of the season. Rosberg will hope the luck
returns to his side of the garage this weekend.
Lewis Hamilton secured pole at the Nürburgring last year
but he had a poor start on race day and the Red Bulls of
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber surged past him at the
first corner. Webber fell out of contention when a wheel
wasn't secured properly at his first pitstop, with the
loose wheel injuring a cameraman. Kimi Räikkönen and
Romain Grosjean became Vettel's closest challengers after
a safety car period, caused by Jules Bianchi's stricken
car rolling back down a hill. Grosjean eventually yielded
to his Lotus teammate but Räikkönen failed to catch
Vettel.
