|
The British GP at the Silverstone Circuit holds a unique
place in Formula 1 history because they were the event and
venue that ushered in the sport's World Championship era in 1950. A
British round has been ever-present since then, something
only matched by the Italian GP. Alfa Romeo's Giuseppe
"Nino" Farina won that inaugural World Championship race on
his way to the title, but Grand Prix motor racing first
appeared in Britain many years prior to the introduction
of Formula 1.
After racing successes in France and San Sebastián in the
early-1920s, Henry Segrave decided to bring the Grand Prix
to a British audience whose interest in the sport was on
the rise. The first British GP took place in 1926 at Brooklands. The concrete oval circuit
hosted the following year's race, too, but that was to be
the last event until 1948.
Silverstone has been synonymous with the British GP since
the late-1940s but down the years it's alternated hosting
duties with Aintree and Brands Hatch, although Silverstone has
been the exclusive host from 1986 onwards. It was
announced Donington Park, venue for the 1993 European GP, would replace
Silverstone from 2010. Ultimately, though, a lack of funds
sank the project.
Silverstone has always been one of the fastest circuits on
the calendar despite going through a number of changes.
The most recent layout alteration occurred
in time for the 2010 race, with the start/finish line and pits relocating
the following year.
Silverstone in Britain is the setting for round nine of
the 2014 Formula 1 season, taking place on Sunday, June
6th. Nico Rosberg returned to the front of the field last
time out in Austria, with Lewis Hamilton making sure
Mercedes notched another 1-2 finish. The surprise of the
weekend was Williams locking out the front row of the grid
and they backed that up on race day with Valtteri Bottas
claiming his first ever podium and Felipe Massa securing
fourth.
In 2013, Lewis Hamilton grabbed pole at his home Grand
Prix by nearly half a second and looked settled in first
place in the opening seven laps of the race. However,
Hamilton dramatically fell to the back of the field when
he suffered a puncture going down the Wellington Straight.
There were further punctures for Felipe Massa and
Jean-Éric Vergne, prompting the safety car to be deployed.
Sebastian Vettel, who had inherited the lead from
Hamilton, was cruising in front until his gearbox failed.
This handed Nico Rosberg the lead and after a second
safety car period he held off the fast-approaching Mark
Webber, with Fernando Alonso completing the podium.
