Fantasy Formula 1 - Austrian GP Preview
4:32 AM on June 16th, 2014 by Nathan Susanto

Message Board

The first Austrian GP was in 1963, a non-championship event but still attracting the likes of Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt and eventual winner Jack Brabham. Formula 1 status was granted the following year and like the previous edition the race was held at Zeltweg, a circuit built on the site of an airfield. Its abrasive surface was undesirable, though, so a purpose-built circuit was required.

Österreichring was constructed in a mountainous location and like many circuits at that time it was dangerous. In 1975, Mark Donohue had a fatal accident and though the fast Vöest-Hügel Kurve was subsequently replaced by a chicane little else was done to increase safety. The 1985 and 1987 races saw pile-ups at the start along the narrow pit straight and soon the circuit underwent an enforced facelift.

Formula 1 returned to the revamped venue in 1997 and it witnessed controversy. In 2001, Rubens Barrichello was set for second place until he almost came to a complete standstill just before the finish line, deliberately, but begrudgingly, allowing Ferrari teammate Michael Schumacher to overtake at the checkered flag. Then, Barrichello dominated the 2002 event, claiming pole and leading the race throughout until team orders were issued again and he gifted Schumacher victory.

The venue known as Österreichring, A1-Ring and now Red Bull Ring looked to replace the postponed GP of America in 2013 and though it was unsuccessful it finally struck a deal for 2014, 11 years after the Austrian GP fell off the calendar.

Formula 1 returns to Austria for round eight of the 2014 season, with the race getting under way on Sunday, June 22nd.

When the sport last pitched up in the Austrian mountains the cars were powered by V10 engines, creating Formula 1's fastest era, dominated by Ferrari. Eleven years on we have a different powerhouse at the head of the pack in the guise of Mercedes AMG.

However, after claiming the first six races of the season and securing five consecutive 1-2 finishes, the Mercedes stranglehold on the top step of the podium was finally loosened last time out in an incident-packed Canadian GP.

It looked like the Silver Arrows were on course for a record sixth successive 1-2 finish but Lewis Hamilton succumbed to brake failure and reduced power meant Nico Rosberg couldn't fend off Daniel Ricciardo, who became F1's newest maiden winner.

Remember to make your game picks in the 2014 Fantasy Formula 1 thread before the deadline of Saturday, June 21st at 8 AM ET, when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Austrian GP facts and stats.
