|
The Chinese region has had major motor racing
since the mid-1950s. The streets of Macau - a Special Administrative Region
of China - is the venue for one of the world's biggest
motor racing events, where hundreds of racing drivers and
riders convene annually to take on the challenging Guia Circuit.
In the early 1990s, the Chinese government wanted to bring
Formula 1 to its shores. A location for a new circuit was
chosen in Zhuhai, a short distance from Macau. The Zhuhai International Circuit was built
and the Chinese GP was provisionally penciled in as part
of the 1999 calendar. However, the venue failed to meet
FIA standards and so China had to wait until the 21st
century to realize its F1 dream.
A deal was struck in 2002 with the Shanghai International Circuit, located
in the Jiading District in the northwestern part of the
most populous city in the world. The track is another
brainchild of Hermann Tilke, inspired by the Chinese
character shang (上), meaning "above" or "ascend". Despite
its gimmicky origins, though, the layout has produced some
intriguing battles since the first race in 2004.
It's been difficult for anybody to master the Shanghai
layout, with the ten Chinese GP producing eight different
winners. The only multiple victors to date are Lewis
Hamilton, who triumphed in 2008 and 2011, and Fernando Alonso, who took the
checkered flag in 2005 and 2013.
The fourth flyaway race of the 2014 Formula 1 season takes
place on Sunday, April 20th in Shanghai, China. This
year's opening rounds are becoming a battle of supremacy
within Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg leading the drivers'
championship but Lewis Hamilton winning the last two
races. Last time out the teammates went head-to-head in a
mammoth duel at the front in Bahrain, where Hamilton had
to use all his racing nous to fend off Rosberg.
Lewis Hamilton grabbed pole at the 2013 Shanghai event but
he couldn't quite compete with the other frontrunners on
race pace. He was quickly hunted down by Ferrari's
Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, who ran first and second
until the first pitstops. Nico Hülkenberg, Jenson Button
and Sebastian Vettel led briefly, as they began on the
prime tires, but as the strategies played out Alonso took
control. He crossed the finish line first ahead of Kimi
Räikkönen, and Hamilton just held off the charging Vettel
for the final podium position.

Shanghai facts:
- The polesitter has won five out of ten races at
Shanghai.
- Only one polesitter has failed to finish the Chinese
GP.
