Fantasy Formula 1 - Bahrain GP Preview
3:50 AM on March 31st, 2014 by Nathan Susanto

Message Board

Bahrain made history in 2004 when it became the first Middle Eastern country to host a Formula 1 event. The island nation's Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was instrumental in the bidding process and he initiated the construction of the Bahrain International Circuit.

Formula 1's go-to designer Hermann Tilke was in charge of the project and he produced a complex that featured six different tracks which helped the country become the Persian Gulf's center of motorsport. In 2010, the "Endurance Circuit" was used but the addition of the bumpy and twisty section was widely criticized and so they reverted back to the layout used between 2004 and 2009.

In December 2010, the Arab Spring began and it quickly spread throughout North Africa and the Middle East. An uprising broke out in Bahrain on February 14th, 2011, less than one month before the nation was scheduled to host the Formula 1 season opener. A decision was made to postpone the race but the FIA proposed to reschedule the event. With the unrest continuing and some teams' reluctance to accept the revised calendar, the 2011 grand prix was eventually canceled but the sport returned to Bahrain in 2012, to a loud chorus of disapproval.

In 2014, to help mark the Bahrain GP's ten-year anniversary, the event's start time will be moved to a later slot to make it a twilight race.

Hot on the heels of the previous round, the third race of the 2014 Formula 1 season takes place in Bahrain this weekend. Lewis Hamilton bounced back from his retirement in Australia with an imperious drive on Sunday to take the checkered flag in Malaysia. He led teammate Nico Rosberg across the line to give Mercedes their first 1-2 finish since 1955. Four-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel finally got points on the board by finishing third behind the Mercedes.

Nico Rosberg took pole in Bahrain last year but the Mercedes' trait of over-heating the tires took its toll. While Rosberg was dropping down the field, Sebastian Vettel was taking control of the race. Fernando Alonso's chances of a podium finish disappeared when his Ferrari's DRS flap on the rear wing was stuck open and Lotus drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean took advantage. However, Vettel cruised to victory ahead of the duo.

Remember to make your game picks in the 2014 Fantasy Formula 1 thread before the deadline of Saturday, April 5th at 11 AM ET, when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Bahrain GP facts and season stats.
