ASFL2 Keeper League Rules

Introduction

Due in part to murmurs of interest in keeper leagues and a desire to increase the activity of the website the commissioner decided to create a series of keeper leagues branded under the ASFL2 umbrella with an overall points competition to determine a winner strictly through the keeper leagues without influence from the main ASFL2 competition on the results.

For those unfamiliar, a keeper league is a fantasy league where a team gets to keep a set amount of players at the end of the season for use in the following season. A keeper league functions as a normal fantasy league otherwise.

ASFL2 Keeper Leagues will cover Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Basketball, Fantasy Football and Fantasy Hockey. Should yahoo create another draft sport/game in the future it will be considered for addition.

At the start leagues will be comprised of 14 members where possible. In order to keep there from being a limit on the number of members able to participate, there will be multiple levels of leagues throughout each sport, with members being promoted and relegated through them based on their performance from year-to-year. This set up will also help keep members competing against members of about the same caliber and not those well above their head. The original league designations for each sport were determined based on championship point totals as of March 1st, 2009, percentage of fantasy games participated in in the 2008-09, percentage of keeper league sports signed up for, bonus point total (as of 3/1/09), and overall activity on the message board.

General/In-Season Rules

The top level league for a sport will be called the Premier Division, the second league will be designated the Second Division and so on until all leagues are accounted for.

The game settings and scoring will be the same as a regular ASFL2 league, but with the bench spots being equal to those of the 12-team leagues instead of the 14-team leagues. Here are the rules for each sport:

Fantasy Baseball (22 player roster)
Fantasy Basketball (13 player roster)
Fantasy Football (16 player roster)
Fantasy Hockey (18 player roster)

The championship point scoring won't be the same and will differ by level as well, you can view the rules on that on a separate page.

All playoff formats will have six teams. Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Basketball and Fantasy Hockey will also have a consolation playoff; Fantasy Football will not- the playoffs will be in Weeks 14, 15 and 16 of the NFL season.

Promotion/Relegation Setup

In all 14-team league set-ups three teams will be promoted and three teams will be relegated in each sport after each season. The gap between the lowest league and the next lowest league may see fewer teams promoted and relegated depending on the number of teams in the lowest league.

Relegation:
In 14-team leagues for Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Basketball and Fantasy Hockey the two teams who don't qualify for the consolation playoff bracket will be relegated to the next lowest division in the line (i.e. Premier to Second, Second to Third, etc.). The third team to be be sent down will be the team who finishes last in the consolation playoffs unless they won the season series vs the 12th-place team in the regular season. If the series was split the aggregate scores will be used as a tiebreaker.

In Fantasy Football, the bottom three teams at the end of the regular season will be relegated.

The three members that are relegated will have to choose their new teams from those that were vacated by promotion. The final playoff standings for each team will determine the order in which each member can pick their new team. The final regular season standings will determine the order of picks in the next season's draft.

Promotion:
The three going down will be replaced by the playoff champion of the league directly below them as well as the regular season winner. The third team to be promoted will be the regular season runner-up, unless they lost the season series to the playoff runner-up. If the series was split the aggregate totals will be used as a tiebreaker. If the top two teams from the regular season finish 1-2 in the playoffs, the third team to move up will be the regular season third place finisher, unless they lost to the season series to the third-place playoff winner. In the event of a split series the aggregate totals will be used.

The three members that are promoted will have to choose their new teams from those that were vacated by relegation. The final playoff standings for each team will determine the order in which each member can pick their new team. The final regular season standings will determine the order of picks in the next season's draft.

The three teams whose managers get promoted will have one less keeper spot for their new managers than the other teams in the league. The spot they are missing will be filled by a supplemental draft pick at the end of the second round.

Members should want to be promoted through the lower levels to test their skills against the best at a given sport and have a chance at winning the overall title, but those that choose to pass their promotion rights will lose a keeper spot and have a draft pick pushed back as a penalty. In the event of a pass, the highest regular season team not already promoted will be sent up.

The Drafts

The inaugural drafts will be handled as normal live drafts through yahoo with a designated time that is as fair as possible. If it is determined early enough that at least 65% of the league's members are ok with a message board draft may be used.

All subsequent league drafts will be handled on the league message board. There will be a time limit on picks excluding certain hours of the day with draft lists encouraged. If a pick isn't made within the time limit the highest ranked player by Yahoo! that fits in a starting spot that isn't already occupied by another player will be automatically picked. The draft results will be manually entered into the league using Yahoo!'s offline draft feature by myself or an assistant commissioner.

The draft order for the Premier Division will be such:
  1. Regular season champion from lower division
  2. Second highest regular season record from the lower division
  3. Third highest regular season record from the lower division
  4. Consolation playoff winner from the season before (7th place after playoffs)
  5. Lowest returning regular season record
  6. Second lowest returning regular season record
  7. Third lowest returning regular season record
  8. Fourth lowest returning regular season record
  9. Fifth place playoff winner from the season before
  10. Fifth place playoff loser from the season before
  11. Third place playoff winner from the season before
  12. Third place playoff loser from the season before
  13. League Runner-Up
  14. League Champion

In lower level leagues that see three new members come down from the league above the bottom half of the draft order may not match the above order. The three members relegated into the league will pick in the final three spots with the last pick going to the worst regular season record from the higher league. In leagues that don't fit the desired numbers the future draft order will be posted as soon as possible.

Draft pick trading will be allowed, but there will still need to be at least one player being given up on both sides to make the trade doable in Yahoo! during the season, unless the trade only involves draft picks. In order to make a trade involving draft picks, a member involved in the trade will need to post the trade in the ASFL2 Keeper Leagues section of the message board in a new thread titled with the league name and sport. The other member involved then replyies to the thread to confirm.

Player Keeping Rules
Each sport will have a different base number of keepers as they all have different numbers of starters and different roster sizes,
Baseball will have 8 base keeper spots, 50% of the starters and 36% of the roster
Basketball will have 5 base keeper spots, 55% of the starters and 38% of the roster
Football will have 6 base keeper spots, 67% of the starters and 38% of the roster
Hockey will have 7 base keeper spots, 54% of the starters and 38% of the roster
These numbers will be subject to change as I get a feel for how well they function.

Any team can only reserve two players at any position aside from SPs in baseball.

Teams will be allowed to forfeit keeper spots to move a round ahead (per spot forfeited) in the draft of everyone who kept all of their keeper spots (or more than that team did).

Teams will also be allowed to trade away or acquire an extra keeper spot for a season. There will be stipulations as to the designated rankings the teams must be above or below and the times of the season when this will be allowable so as to try to not affect teams whos managers get relegated. However, if a team trades a keeper spot but winds up being relegated or promoted that spot will be given back to the original team for the new manager. In order to make a trade involving keeper spots, a member involved in the trade will need to post the trade in the ASFL2 Keeper Leagues section of the message board in a new thread titled with the league name and sport. The other member involved then replyies to the thread to confirm.

Championship Scoring

You can view the scoring breakdown for each fantasy game at each level on the Keeper League Scoring page. The totals will be different, but function in the same manner as the regular ASFL2 championship points.

Signing Up

All you need to do is fill out the ASFL2 Keeper Leagues Sign-Up Form.

The form is used to inform me of what sports you are signing up for, your experience and your preferential draft times. I ask that you give me your basic info again to make my life a little easier when I set up and update some of the pages on the website, though I usually have most memorized.

Reasons for Removal

Members may be removed from the league for collusion, abbrasiveness (or general discourse created amongst other members as a result of a particular member) or inactivity. A member isn't required to participate in every game the league offers, but are strongly encouraged to be active on the league's sports talk message board as its also used to give out information to members.

You are also not allowed to spam your own leagues. With the number of people here, I can't allow advertising- if one can do it, I'd have to let all do it, and that would lead to chaos. Anyone found advertising will be warned, If theres still activity from there, they will be removed.

If you are deemed to be inactive for an extended period of time without warning or without reason you may be removed or demoted. If you fail to give your keeper selections in the offseason you will be removed and/or they will be chosen by default. Deadlines will be posted on the message board.
